Project 2

Module 2

Our project explores how live performance, dynamic visuals, and audience interaction can merge to create an emotionally engaging and immersive audio-visual experience. Beginning with the selection of “A Long Dream” by SE SO NEON, we grounded our design in the song’s lyrical themes and descriptions, translating its sections into distinct imagery that will be shaped by movement, colour, and interactivity. Through both physical and digital prototyping, we refined the clarity and spatial impact of our setup. Our exploration of Touch Designer allowed us to develop dynamic visuals inspired by themes of the song, while Kinect and MIDI related testing introduced us to responsive elements that connect the performers and their audience. This project is ultimately driven by the desire to craft a performance where music, motion, and interaction continuously influence each other, and where the audience becomes an important part of the visual narrative.

Activity 1: My Resarch

After conversing with the two performers of the group, we ultimately chose ‘A Long Dream’ by SE SO NEON as our performance song. Once the song was chosen, I began analyzing the music video and the lyrics so that I could generate some educated inspiration for our visual components that were still faithful to the song. The “blooming” can be visualized by flower buds that expand or grow as the performers play their instruments. This section would be primarily performer input. With the constant use of “you”, I suggested that we use this section of the song to prioritize the audience Kinect input in the visual. This visual would highlight the performer’s relationship with the audience by using imagery relating to physical interactions and touch. This section can be visualized with blue visuals with lots of movement, resembling water, wind, and the night sky, all in one.

Project 2 Prototype

Here we positioned the projector to cover both the floor and wall of the SSU prototype. This was the prototype we showed our peers to provide us feedback for. The feedback provided by our peers offered us valuable insight into how our project can evolve into a more engaging and immersive experience for both the performers and audience. One of the main points that was brought to our attention was the predictability of the visuals. Though we originally plan to have three different interactive visuals that will alternate throughout the performance, it is important for future iterations that we incorporate varied motion so the audience doesn’t lose interest. And technical considerations regarding backdrop colour and projection quality are extremely important to our future iterations, as they deeply effect the visibility of our final design and may make it difficult for some to pick up on details. For future tests, we intend to remake our SSU prototype and also test our visuals on a sharper projector so we can see the true potential of our final designs. Overall, the feedback affirmed that we are still in our earlier prototyping stages, but still encouraged us to keep exploring future possibilities and refining our concept.
